From Gratitude to Global Impact: The Story Behind Milkshakes for Marleigh
I recently had the privilege of joining the Patient Voice podcast to share a story that began in one of the most vulnerable moments of my life — and has since grown into something far bigger than I ever imagined.
This is the story of Milkshakes for Marleigh.
But more than that, it’s a story about humanity.
The Moment Everything Changed
There are moments in life that divide time into “before” and “after.”
For our family, that moment came when my daughter needed blood to survive.
In those hours, nothing else mattered — not policy, not systems, not strategy. Just one simple, profound truth:
Someone, somewhere, had chosen to donate blood.
A stranger had rolled up their sleeve.
And that decision saved my child’s life.
Gratitude in Action
In the aftermath, I found myself sitting with a question I couldn’t shake:
How do you ever thank someone you will never meet — but who gave your child a future?
For me, the answer wasn’t words. It was action.
Milkshakes for Marleigh began as a way to say thank you — a way to encourage more people to donate blood, to show up for strangers the way strangers had shown up for us.
It was never about building a “campaign.”
It was about building a culture.
More Than a Moment — A Movement
What has unfolded since has been extraordinary.
What started as a deeply personal act of gratitude has grown into a movement that is reaching beyond our own community — sparking conversations, shifting mindsets, and encouraging people across the world to see blood donation not as something you do in a crisis, but as something you do because you can.
Because someone, somewhere, will need it.
Blood donation is one of the simplest, most powerful acts of humanity we have.
It is the purest form of “give to gain” — where the return is not something you receive, but something someone else gets to keep: their life, their future, their family.
The Power of Story
One of the things I spoke about on Patient Voice is the role of storytelling in driving change.
Data matters. Policy matters. Systems matter.
But stories move people.
Stories make the invisible visible.
They connect us. They humanise the issue. They turn “someone” into someone’s child.
Milkshakes for Marleigh has never been just about blood donation numbers.
It’s about reminding people why those numbers matter.
A Collective Responsibility
If there is one message I hope people take away, it’s this:
Blood donation is not a responsibility for “other people.”
It belongs to all of us.
Not when it’s urgent.
Not when it’s trending.
But consistently — as part of who we are.
Because the reality is simple:
None of us know when we might need it.
But we all have the power to make sure it’s there.
Looking Forward
Being part of the Patient Voice podcast was a reminder of how powerful patient-led advocacy can be when it is grounded in lived experience.
This work is deeply personal.
But its impact is collective.
Milkshakes for Marleigh will continue to grow — not because of me, but because of the people who choose to be part of it. The people who donate. The people who share. The people who show up.
And that’s the point.
This was never about one family.
It’s about all of us.
